Key Points to Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage Plan

Medicare Part D is an insurance program that provides prescription drug coverage to beneficiaries over the age of 65, as well as younger beneficiaries with certain qualifying health conditions. Those enrolled in Original Medicare can purchase a standalone Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Part D plans are offered through private insurance companies that contract with the federal government. Each plan must adhere to certain government restrictions in terms of drug costs, but coverage details will still vary significantly from plan to plan.
Note that Medicare Part D is separate from Medigap, which provides extra coverage for certain Original Medicare expenses.

You can also get Medicare prescription drug coverage through certain Medicare Advantage plans. If you opt for a Medicare Advantage prescription drug plan, your drug coverage will be wrapped in with the rest of your healthcare insurance.

Regardless of whether you choose a standalone Part D plan or Medicare Advantage, it’s essential to review all possible plan options. Some Part D plans offer limited coverage at a lower price point, while others have a more extensive list of covered drugs with higher monthly premiums.

Initial enrollment in Medicare Part D plans starts three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after your birthday. Before you sign up for Medicare Part D, you’ll need to enroll in Original Medicare, which you can also do during this period.

If you decide to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan instead, you can also do so during this initial enrollment period.

Aliana has been serving me and my husband for several years now. We are always so thankful for her knowledge, reliability, support, kindness and sense of humor. She has gone beyond the call of duty for us on more than one occasion. We have her review our plan every year. If she doesn’t have an answer for our questions (which is rare!), she gets right back to us after she finds out.

Frequently Asked Questions

To enroll in Medicare Part D for the first time, you typically need to do so during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which begins three months before you turn 65 and lasts for seven months. You can sign up online through the Social Security Administration’s website, by phone, or in person at your local Social Security office.

If you miss your IEP, you can enroll during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year.

When enrolling, you will choose a Medicare Part D plan that best fits your prescription needs. Compare the different plans available in your area, considering factors like monthly premiums, deductibles, coverage for specific medications, and pharmacy networks.

Yes, you can obtain Medicare Part D coverage alone in Nevada, even if you have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

This standalone plan, known as a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), provides coverage specifically for prescription medications. To enroll in a PDP, you must already be enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that includes prescription drug coverage, you cannot enroll in a standalone Part D plan. However, if your Medicare Advantage plan does not cover prescription drugs, you may still enroll in a standalone PDP to help manage your medication costs.

While Medicare Part D is not mandatory, it is highly recommended for seniors in Reno, NV, and across the country.

If you don’t enroll when you’re first eligible, you may face a late enrollment penalty if you decide to sign up later. This penalty is an additional cost added to your monthly premium and lasts for as long as you have Part D coverage.

In Nevada, individuals who are not eligible for Medicare Part D include those who do not qualify for Medicare itself. Generally, you must be 65 years or older, or under 65 with certain disabilities, to be eligible for Medicare.

Additionally, individuals who are not enrolled in either Medicare Part A or Part B cannot enroll in a Medicare Part D plan.

Moreover, those with limited prescription drug coverage through other programs may also not be eligible for Part D. For instance, individuals with certain types of Medicaid plans or those receiving care through the Veterans Affairs may not need to enroll in Part D if they already have sufficient prescription drug coverage.
