What Is a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap)?

Medicare covers a lot, but it doesn’t cover everything. That first surprise bill is sometimes a bit of a wake-up call.

This is where Medicare Supplement Plans, also known as Medigap, come in.

These private insurance policies can help pay for the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare leaves behind, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. In some cases, a Medigap plan can mean the difference between manageable healthcare expenses and unexpected financial strain.

Medigap plans are widely trusted by seniors. A 2023 survey by AHIP found that 93% of seniors are satisfied with their Medicare Supplement plan, with 80% saying they are very or extremely satisfied.

Even more telling, 91% of seniors would worry about losing their financial security if they didn’t have Medigap coverage.

But not all plans are the same. Choosing a Medicare Supplement Plan depends on your health needs, budget, and long-term care expectations. With so many options available, it helps to work with a knowledgeable professional.

Senior Insurance Agency specializes in guiding seniors through the complexities of Medigap. Knowing your options now can help you avoid costly gaps later.

Understanding a Medicare Supplement Plan (Medigap)?

A Medicare Supplement Plan, also known as Medigap insurance, is a private health insurance policy that helps cover costs not paid by Original Medicare. These Medicare supplement insurance plans fill the “gaps” in coverage, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) provides essential health coverage but doesn’t cover everything. That’s where Medigap insurance comes in. Sold by private insurance companies, Medigap policies work alongside Original Medicare, helping seniors manage out-of-pocket expenses and avoid unexpected healthcare costs.

Medicare Supplement Plans are standardized, meaning the benefits of each plan remain the same regardless of the insurer. However, premiums may vary based on the company and location. While Medicare Supplement Plans help with cost-sharing, they do not include coverage for prescription drugs, dental, or vision — those require separate policies.

How Does Medigap Insurance Work?

Medigap insurance is designed specifically for individuals enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A & B). It does not work with Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, which operate as an alternative to Original Medicare.

Instead, Medigap policies supplement and help cover out-of-pocket expenses like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. However, premiums for Medigap plans vary by insurer, state, and personal factors like age and tobacco use. Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medigap does not include additional benefits like dental, vision, or prescription drug coverage so enrollees may need separate policies for those needs.

What Does Medigap Cover?

A Medicare Supplement Plan can help cover out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. But what does Medigap cover exactly?

While benefits vary slightly between plans, all Medigap policies provide core coverage that helps reduce medical expenses.

Here are the main benefits included in most Medicare Supplement Plans:

  • Part A hospital costs after Medicare benefits run out, including additional days of inpatient care.
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments, covering the 20% of medical expenses that Medicare doesn’t pay.
  • The first 3 pints of blood needed for a medical procedure.
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance, helping with end-of-life care costs.
  • Some plans also cover skilled nursing facility care and foreign travel emergency coverage, which can be essential for frequent travelers.

While Medicare Supplement Plans offer valuable financial protection, they do not cover everything.

What does Medigap coverage not include? Typically, prescription drugs, dental, vision, hearing aids, and long-term care are excluded. Those needing drug coverage should likely consider a Medicare Part D plan.

Medigap Plan Types & Coverage Options

When considering what Medicare supplement coverage includes, get to know the 10 standardized Medigap plans, labeled A through N. Each plan provides a different level of coverage, but all work alongside Original Medicare to help reduce out-of-pocket costs.

The most comprehensive options are Plan F and Plan G. Plan F covers all Medicare-approved expenses but is no longer available to new Medicare enrollees as of 2020. Plan G offers nearly identical benefits, except it requires enrollees to pay the Medicare Part B deductible.

Cost-sharing plans like Plan K and Plan L are available for those looking for lower monthly premiums. These plans cover a percentage of costs rather than the full amount, meaning beneficiaries will pay more out-of-pocket when receiving care but benefit from reduced premiums.

Since Medigap policies offer different levels of coverage, compare plans carefully based on healthcare needs, budget, and expected medical expenses before making a decision.

Who Is Eligible for Medigap?

Medigap is only available to individuals enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. It is not compatible with Medicare Advantage plans.

In most cases, enroll in a Medigap plan during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which lasts six months from the month you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have issue rights, meaning insurance companies cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions.

If you apply outside this enrollment window, insurers can require medical underwriting, which may result in higher premiums or denied coverage based on health history.

Medigap: More Than Just a Safety Net

Health expenses in retirement are inevitable. Medicare provides a foundation, but it does not cover everything. Medigap is more than just an add-on. It has the potential to offer both stability and predictability.

Make an informed decision to reduce financial stress and let you focus on your health instead of unexpected bills. Planning ahead means taking control of your future, rather than just reacting to costs as they come.
