Medicare Enrollment Periods

When You Can Join or Change Coverage

Medicare has several enrollment windows, and choosing the one that suits your needs can help you sidestep avoidable costs or delays in coverage.

At Senior Insurance Agency, our agents help Nevada seniors make sense of these timelines so your choices feel clear and manageable. Here’s a simple overview of the major enrollment periods and how they fit into your planning.

What Is a Medicare Enrollment Period?

A Medicare enrollment period is a specific timeframe when you can:

  • Sign up for Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical)
  • Join or change Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans
  • Add or switch Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
  • Use special enrollment rights due to life events

These windows are set by Medicare and are different depending on your situation.

Key Enrollment Periods: What Is the Medicare Deadline?

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Who it’s for: People new to Medicare (usually turning age 65).
When it happens: Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after that month (a 7-month window total).

What you can do:

  • Enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
  • Join a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Add a Part D prescription drug plan

Important: If you enroll during this period, you avoid late enrollment penalties for Part B or Part D.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

Also called: Medicare Open Enrollment
Who it’s for: People already eligible for Medicare.
When: October 15 – December 7 each year.

What you can do between Oct 15 – Dec 7:

  • Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Switch between Medicare Advantage plans
  • Join, drop, or switch a Part D drug plan
  • Go from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare

Changes take effect January 1 of the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

Who it’s for: People already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
When: January 1 – March 31 each year.

What you can do:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
  • Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan)

This period gives a second chance for Advantage members to adjust coverage after the Annual Enrollment Period.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

Who it’s for: People who missed their Initial Enrollment Period and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
When: January 1 – March 31 each year.

What you can do:

  • Sign up for Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Coverage starts the first of the month after you enroll, but late enrollment penalties may apply if you didn’t have other creditable coverage.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Who qualifies: People with certain life events, such as:

  • Losing job-based coverage
  • Moving out of a plan’s service area
  • Qualifying for Extra Help
  • Other qualifying life changes

Special Enrollment Periods let you join or change plans outside the standard windows without penalty. Timing depends on the event.

Tip: SEPs are personalized, so eligibility and timing vary based on your situation.

Why These Dates Matter

Medicare enrollment windows aren’t flexible, and missing one can affect both your coverage and your long-term costs.

If you wait too long to sign up, you may face:

  • Late enrollment penalties that raise your Part B or Part D premiums, sometimes permanently.
  • Delays in when your coverage begins, which can leave you without the protection you were counting on.

Understanding the timeline helps you avoid surprises and keeps your healthcare planning on track.

FAQs About Medicare Enrollment Periods 2026

Medicare Open Enrollment for 2026 runs from October 15 to December 7, 2025. During this window, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, change your Part D drug plan, or move between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare.

Yes. You can switch Medicare Advantage plans during Open Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7) and again during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which runs January 1 to March 31, 2026.

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you experience a life change, such as losing employer coverage, moving out of your plan’s service area, gaining eligibility for Extra Help, or if your current plan makes significant changes. The length of your SEP depends on the specific event.

Yes. If you delay Part B or Part D without other creditable coverage, you may face monthly penalties added to your premium. These penalties can last as long as you have the coverage.

If your plan ends for 2026, you’ll receive a notice and automatically qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This gives you time to choose new coverage, including another Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D drug plan.
